Welcome to Heart of Gwynedd Art Festival that will take place at the end of July and beginning of August 2019. As part of the festival, we're hosting two fantastic and very different artists, each showcasing their working methods and talking visitors through the processes of their creations.
The free event will run from Saturday 27 July to Sunday 4 August.
Ieuan Williamson, a roofer by trade, started Lechen Lan - Heritage and Modern Roofing in 2015. Seeking more creative projects, he studied ornate slating under Hans-Peter Koennecke at the Master Roofers School in Cologne, Germany.
The slate reliefs are assembled in layers, each slate is individually chosen on colour, texture and thickness, hand shaped then overlapped with the course below. Pulling imagery straight from his locality, the works depict animals, dragons and mythical figures. Ieuan states that it is as important for each piece to be beautiful as it is to be watertight. You have to follow the rules of a roofer.
'For this exhibition I have combined relief work and naked flame with the principles of drawing to produce images on copper that reflect the beauty and industrial heritage of these mountains.'
